X201T allow larger memory cards. I think the 4G limit in the X200T's is 'too bad' but I balk at the 8G pricing on the 201's but I think if I was ordering a 201T today, I would order a 4G on a single DIMM even if it is an extra $200.There are a number of people who feel that a i5 is better 'bang' for the dollar than a i7.Buy at least a dual frequency N card (Intel 5300 or better). 5Ghz is so much better wireless than 2.4Ghz - I upgraded all the laptops and the router in my home to support 5Ghz.Wish they had put in a better graphics chip or a dual graphics system like the non-tablet models.Battery life if you can get a SULV processor should be better on the 200T though the i7 201T still claims 6 hours I think that's with a SSD.If you are buying through a university, you can get some great deals, often including the base station which will give you much better speakers, microphones, gigabit Ethernet jack and 4 more USB ports. The ability to keep connected wire/usb connections to the base while it's locked with the kensington to your desk, and an extra battery charger with indicator and a slot for a second HDD or DVD/CD or Blueray burners. Also there are Displayport and VGA 1920x1200 output connections if you want to have a larger monitor or secondary display. Note that the monitor connections are higher res than the unit's monitor.Remember if you use a printer or other USB device, Windows likes it connected to the same port else you get all sorts of duplicate devices, some of whose special software won't work since it configured itself for a particular usb port. Especially true of usb photo printers.

Connecting most of your stuff through a base keeps them consistent. For long term use, the highest performance processor that you can afford is best. The ability to add more memory (without tossing out cards if possible) or the max memory. (IOW, if a 200, buy 2G on one dimm or 4G right off the bat and on a 201 by 4G on one dimm and find another 4G card when the prices drop or at a 3P EOM - unless you know of a significantly cheaper 4G card in advance and order with a 1 or 2G single.)A 7200 rpm HDD with a $50 4G turbo memory card can be almost as effective as a much more expensive and smaller capacity SSD. (My daughter says the HDD sleeps 90% of the time in her classes.) Lenovo's HDD pricing is a bit higher, since 500G 7200RPMs are $100 or less on sale.

Win7 is easy to transfer to a new bigger hdd if you have a USB storage to do a full system image save, swap drives and then booting from DVD, do a system restore onto the new HDD. The old HDD can be used in the base station wtih an adaptor or a usb connection enclosure for about $20 or less if you buy on eBay from the electronics guys in Hong Kong. I have a 2.5' usb enclosure than cost me $3 on eBay and had free shipping. SATA's slimline enclosures (for a ultrabase) run $6-20.

Click to expand. This is great information. It should be in a sticky. Frankly, I had never considered getting a base station but the points you made are causing me to reconsider.I have a family member who works for IBM, so I'll probably be going the EPP route (it seems to be the best choice, $$-wise). I would really rather get the 201, but I need some familiarization time with this before classes start in early August. I'll probably give it another month or so.

Plus, I haven't completely discounted the HP or Fujitsu. I'm not worried about weight, and the extra real estate on the Fujitsu screen is appealing. Thanks for providing this valuable input! The employee discount is only 10% last I heard. I know a lot of IBMers. The university discount can be as much as 25% on some models and come with a 4 year warranty. At GaTech where my kid goes, she got $890 off the list price of a x200 last year.

UlV 9700, 4G, 360G 7200, base station, 5300n. 4yr depot warranty. GT picks configurations that they say will 'last for 4 yrs' I bought her a turbo card later (it's a legit customer install) and she put it in herself, picking up 40 min on battery life.Check again with the school's IT dept, you and your family may be surprised. I took her to a store that had multiple T and X models, to try for size, since GT offered T400, T500, X200 and X200T models. They also offered Dell and Apple, but the discount wasn't as good as Lennovo.

GT also ordered X200's for it's staff and it had the highest percentage discount.Well, there were some pretty good sales in the last few weeks of X200ts. I hear that in a few months intel will have a 18w ULV i5 and i7 chip available.

Lennovo is sure to plug this into the line. Click to expand.Windows handwriting recognition and the button layout on the tablet are easy to catch on to. Even my really sloppy handwriting is better than 90% without training. Younger people seem to print more than use script, so it shouldn't have much of an issue with that right off the bat.Order an extra pen, just in case since you won't be able to 'write' without one. Each pen comes with 3 nibs and a nib puller. You can order a tether, too, they come in a 3 pack, but if you have woven fishing line and can tie a good knot you can save $10.

While the touch part is fun for web browsing and a few things (multi-touch is only 2 fingers) my daughter would rather have a clean screen than one that's smudgy and seldom actually uses her fingers. Touch is turned off when the pen is nearby anyway.IMHO the most interesting and time factor consuming thing will be learning OneNote well, which, I think is one of the best note-taking software packages I've come across which anyone with a tablet should give a try. Integrates anything, notes, audio, video, webpages, Office, photos, etc. Onenote comes in the Academic vrs of MS Office. $80-149 for 3 pcs or in the academic pricing for MS Office Ultimate is $60 for 1 PC. Most people really don't need outlook, access or publisher and most schools won't have a sharepoint server for the students for the other ultimate series functions. OneNote can sync with mult-pcs and be shared with other students who have OneNote and used collaboratively.

Onenote can record audio and create a searchable index of the audio. Record class lectures as you take notes, the templates for lectures is outstanding - again IMHO.

(It can also video record the lectures too, but the camera on the X200 series wouldn't be pointed in the right place to take notes at the same time.) Outlook does integrate it's scheduler with OneNote so it's easy to put in to-do and test dates in your calendar and the RA/TA's contact info without much effort and if you have a Winphone. In any case, you need to load 'all the features' when you install it as without a base you won't have a CD/DVD handy all the time. Most academic pricing for software, e.g., Photoshop CS4 is 60% or more off list at $199. Most schools offer free virus software with updates.

Don't buy much of anything save 'Lojack for laptops' preloaded. (Then give your PC's serial number to the campus police when you get there.

Ibm Employee Serial Number

If they stop anyone, they will know right off if the laptop or iPhone/iPad whatever is that person's or not. GaTech police return lots of electronics back to their owners this way - hard to lookup a serial number when the paperwork is at home and the units gone. A X20nT can be worth several thousand if it's top end and make sure your parent's homeowners policy covers it at school.)If you do autocad in college, you'll need a good mouse, the tablet mode won't cut it to use the pen. There's a thread here on that topic and my kid tried and also found it wanting since you don't have enough keys/buttons available to program.I think that the X200 series is small, and that when used on a desktop (typing papers for hours) you should have at least a elevated slant stand, and a wireless keyboard if it's replacing your desktop.

Many guys bring gaming rigs to college, so this may be moot since you can sync folders. My daughter replaced her desktop rig with the laptop and uses a collection of USB sticks on the computer labs and library systems.Unlike many people on this forum, I LIKE the ThinkVantage tech programs (although the default settings are too aggressive and they need to be moved back to reasonable levels when updating and testing; a week or month vs daily) over a 'clean' setup. Lenovo's power settings, and wireless connections are IMHO top notch and better than what Windows offers.Access Connections can setup profiles for locations that auto-change the default printers, change firewall/share settings or open certain programs, etc. Based on connection type and locations. Some of the tablets special function buttons REQUIRE the TV software drivers to be installed. Software switching of Wireless B/G/N & bluetooth & WiMax & Mobile wireless via a keystroke. Presentation Director for external displays, all easy to understand and faster than using Windows to switch settings and turn on and off display output.

Right now the biggest issue is the Lenovo drivers vs generic drivers from the mfgrs such as Intel. Intel says to install Lenovo (OEM) software. Lenovo's update utility is good, but not always right and does not always selects all the driver updates that are available. The diagnostic toolbox software is a mixed bag since some of the hardware tests it wants to do to give you a hardware 'green check' are very very time consuming. But it will tell you if you are latest Thinkvantage or Windows patch updated and can manage your backups too.
